BLOG TOUR [Guest Post +Giveaway!] Sun Poisoned (Sunshine #2) by Nikki Rae

Sun Poisoned (Sunshine #2)
by Nikki Rae
Release Date: June 28th, 2013

Synopsis:

Sophie’s life has changed. She’s moved to New York, she’s playing music for new people, and she’s making new friends. Then there’s Myles, and the fact that he is now her boyfriend—and everyone knows it.

She’s not exactly normal, living in a half-human, half-vampire world, but she’s finally, truly happy. However, some parts of Sophie and Myles’ old lives still hide in the dark, waiting for the right opportunity to strike.

Sophie’s having nightmares again, but they aren't about her; Myles is hiding something as well, something Sophie isn’t sure she wants to know.

And one lie will change everything.

No matter how hard she tries to cover up the marks her monsters have left behind, they never truly go away, and Myles’ monsters are no different.

Once again, Sophie’s caught between life and death, but this time, only she can save herself.

Sunshine (Sunshine #1)
by Nikki Rae
Release Date: June 28th, 2013

Synopsis:

18 year old Sophie Jean is pretty good at acting normal. Sure, she’s not exactly happy, but happiness is nothing compared to being like everyone else. She can pretend she’s not allergic to the sun. She can hide what her ex-boyfriend did to her. She can cover up the scars she’s made for herself. Ignore anything. Forget anything. Then Myles enters her life, and he has more than a few secrets of his own. When accident after accident keeps happening to Sophie, she can’t help noticing that he’s everywhere. That he knows too much. That she’s remembering too much.

It’s one thing covering up her own dark past, but does she really need to worry about people finding out just how much Myles likes her? Or that despite how much she doesn’t want to repeat past mistakes, she kind of likes him back? Not to mention the fact that she now has to conceal that Myles drinks blood-that he says he’s about four hundred years old.

She almost forgot about that part.

But Sophie has no plans to ruin the normal life she has created for herself. She can deal with this little glitch, no problem. Even if word has gotten around to the wrong vampire about Sophie and Myles, even if she’s putting the few people she loves at risk. Suddenly, those who were monsters before are just people, and the monsters? They’re real. Now being a normal human being is the least of her problems. Now she has to stay alive.

When I first decided to self-publish, I did it because I wanted my friends and family to be able to see what i was writing. I expected maybe ten people to read my books, and if that happened, I was happy with that. I never expected to have “readers” or a “fanbase”, so when people I didn’t know started to not only read, but like my books, I began to realize how special my decision really was. Throughout the short almost-year I’ve been an indie author, there have been many things that readers have said that made me happy, overjoyed, and truly humbled. here are the top five.

1. When people quote my books on their facebooks and Twitters.

The first time it happened, I was speechless. Someone I didn’t know, out of the blue, quoted my first book, Sunshine and tweeted me with it. To me, it means that not only are people reading my books and liking them, but parts of my books are staying with them after they’re done reading.

2. “Your characters are like real people.”

In whatever I write, the characters come first. I spend so much time crafting them, making every aspect of them as true to life as they can be (even if they’re supernatural). So when a reader tells me something like, “I would have done the same thing,” or “Though I don’t agree with Sophie’s actions, I don’t think she could have reacted any other way”, it tells me that people are able to get into my characters’ heads and find something in them that is human, which is what writing is all about in many ways.

3. “The second book is even better than the first one.”

As in any art, and as with any artist, the more you practice your craft, the better you become. When someone tells me that a book is better than the one that came before it, it tells me that I’m still learning and growing, which is really rewarding in the sense that I know that the next book can only be better, and my readers can recognize that.

4. “I suffer from some of the same issues your main character goes through in your books and I just wanted to say thank you for putting it out there. It helped me a lot.”

When I wrote Sunshine, I used it as a tool to deal with things that were going on in my life that I wouldn’t have been able to deal with otherwise. I never expected anyone to see comfort in Sophie’s story the way I had while writing it. When I got my first message like this, it came from a girl in Germany who struggled with self-harm. Reading her letter and talking to her really put everything into perspective. Five years ago, if someone told me that the pain I went through when I was younger would one day be used to help others, I wouldn’t have believed them.

5. “WHAT?!? You can’t end it like that!”

I hate cliffhangers. A lot. So when I was writing the second book in The Sunshine Series and realized that I couldn’t end it any other way than with a cliffhanger, I was terrified that my readers would hate me. Mostly, people have responded positively to being dangled between one book and the next, even if they are a little...er...angry with me. Comments like this tell me that my readers want more of what I’m writing, and that’s amazing.
