Enclave (Razorland #1) by Ann Aguirre

Enclave (Razorland, #1)

Enclave
 by Ann Aguirre

Summary: Goodreads

In Deuce’s world, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed ‘brat’ has trained into one of three groups–Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms. Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember.

As a Huntress, her purpose is clear—to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She’s worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing’s going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce’s troubles are just beginning.

Down below, deviation from the rules is punished swiftly and harshly, and Fade doesn’t like following orders. At first she thinks he’s crazy, but as death stalks their sanctuary, and it becomes clear the elders don’t always know best, Deuce wonders if Fade might be telling the truth. Her partner confuses her; she’s never known a boy like him before, as prone to touching her gently as using his knives with feral grace.

As Deuce’s perception shifts, so does the balance in the constant battle for survival. The mindless Freaks, once considered a threat only due to their sheer numbers, show signs of cunning and strategy… but the elders refuse to heed any warnings. Despite imminent disaster, the enclave puts their faith in strictures and sacrifice instead. No matter how she tries, Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from the only world she’s ever known.

REVIEW

Wow...I almost forgot to review Enclave. It was one of those books that I bought the sample read it then really couldn't decide if I really wanted to read it. It wasn't one of those that was crazy good from the beginning. It built. But I ended up loving it.

Deuce was an awesome heroine. She had been trained to be a hunter who protected the tunnels from the "people eating mutants" and hunted to bring home other kinds of meat (rats things) to eat for the Enclave. Hunters were partnered together in twos, so enter the love interest, Fade. Fade wasn't born in the Enclave but he was found and trained and he was one of the best hunters out of them all.

There were hunters, builders, and breeders. I guess that pretty much covers everything in society. Everything from the old world had been destroyed and they were told they had to stay underground because they couldn't live topside. Fade and Deuce disobeyed and got banished to topside. Finding out that it wasn't "toxic" up there, like the Elders had always said. But there were gangs and other things up there that would kill them. Fade's dad had told him when he was little, about places the "survivors" had gone to when thing went bad. So that's where they were headed.

I loved the character development that you can see throughout the story. This is definitely one of the best dystopian books I have read and cannot wait until OUTPOST comes out!

It's definitely a must read!!
